March 23-24:SURVIVE

Your photography, your business, and even your life needs a boost.  Survive is an intense two-day workshop/seminar that gives you the working photographer's perspective on adapting to the changing landscape, overcoming obstacles that crop up daily and in your personal life, and improvising ways around some of the most delicate of issues that may get you down.

NO INFOMERCIALS (click to learn more)

You may take both days, or just one.  Here's a preview:

Day 1

The day will start off with some inspiration by Tony Cooper.  A 30-year veteran of the photographic industry, brought up on film, darkroom chemicals and wisdom of the ages, he is going to share personal stories that will inspire you to upgrade yourself and your work by seeing past the minutia and into all the things you've been looking forward to as a photographer.

The day continues with an insightful look at using window light.  This segment is offered by Cindy Alderton of Boudoir by Cindy Alderton in Frederick, MD.  Cindy's unique and clearly brilliant approach to using this truly free method of lighting will also offer lessons in adapting to the surrounding light, and improvising when the light isn't cooperating with you.

There will also be live practice on the techniques you've learned, and personal one-on-one time with Tony or Cindy to go over some of your biggest challenges and receive their help in overcoming them.  At the end of the day, Tony & Cindy will wrap things up with some very interesting tips on survival, including those areas that nobody else wants to discuss - taxes, bookkeeping, and debt.

Day 2

Starting with a 90-minute presentation by one of this area's master photographers, Jack Dehaven (retired), you are going to learn how the energy of "must do" can mean the difference between surviving and being a some-timer.  In addition to Jack's wildly popular studio and Portrait Park approach to photography, he instituted many sales and marketing programs that have stood the test of time and are used still today with great success.  And honestly, many of them cost you nothing.

The next segment will focus on pricing for profit, something we all could learn more about.  How much do you charge, and are you getting the kind of money for the kind of work you do?  You could be getting more, and this segment will show you how.

After lunch, Tony is going to regale you again with his insightful knowledge on the use of outdoor light, flash, and reflectors (bending light is a lot more fun and easier than you think!).  This will include another two hours of one-on-one instruction with reflectors, flash, off-the-camera devices, and plenty of models ready for your instructions.

This day rounds out with a very special presentation about interpreting body language.  This segment alone will help you read your clients and guide them toward the kind of sales strategy that will give you the most profit with that client.  It will also help you in your personal life to better understand the people around you, and to get more insight into using what you see to better advantage.

Both Days

A catered lunch will be provided both days.  Meal selections may be offered after registration.

A group dinner reservation has been made at a local restaurant at the end of day one.  Dinner is on your own, but you're welcome to join the group and pick our brains just a little more as we wind down.

The high-intensity nature of this event means you will be busy constantly.  We intend to work specifically for those who want to get the most out of this workshop/seminar.  If you feel like you're falling behind, holler and we'll haul you up to the front.

More surprises are coming... but register right now.  We have to limit this workshop to 15 people so that we can offer the kind of one-on-one experience that these topics need.

What's the beef about infomercials?

I recently had the opportunity to watch a video production of a live seminar given by a rather prominent figure in photography education.  I watched as the speaker specifically said that they were not into doing infomercial style workshops, even though their workshop was sponsored by several big names in the industry.  For the first 40 minutes (at least) of the video presentation, there was non-stop chatter about this vendor or that vendor, specifically the sponsors, and so many other vendors that I got lost in it all - and even a little disgusted.  Don't get me wrong, I understand the need to have sponsors for major road tours, but if you know you're going to promote them, don't say you don't do infomercials.

So that we're clear... there are NO sponsors to this workshop.  Just several great, working photographers who want to share their knowledge and experience with you in this two-day workshop.  If you hear the name of a vendor or manufacturer, it will be because someone asked.
